Does Drinking Coke Help Migraine Attacks?
If your social media algorithm is serving you migraine hacks, or if you belong to any migraine support groups or migraine subreddits, you’ve probably heard many people swear by the use of one very familiar product to soothe their attacks: Coca-Cola.
When we asked the Zanskar community for their thoughts on this popular “remedy“ for migraine, our comments section bubbled over with hundreds of responses confirming that many people with migraine count on Coke to help get them through attacks, whether to soothe their pain or quell their nausea:
Ice-cold, full-sugar Coke for me. Maybe it’s the coldness, like wearing the ice cap from inside; maybe it’s a blast of caffeine and sugar. — Pragya
I keep Coke cans stocked in my fridge for this very reason. — Amit Kumar
It’s the only time I drink Coke, and the attack has to be really bad. — Meera
I had a four-day horrific migraine; none of my meds were working, and no amount of sleep helped. Two sips of Coca-Cola and it was gone. — Richa G.
Sometimes when I’ve tried everything else, a can of Coke will do the trick. — Aarya
But what is it about this iconic beverage that has people making videos of themselves with Coke in hand — touting its benefits for migraine?
Is it the caffeine? The sugar? The bubbles?

What Is the Appeal of Coca-Cola for People With Migraine?
As you may have guessed, it seems to be the caffeine and sugar that do the trick.
“Both the caffeine and sugar may be helping in different ways,” says a Zanskar pain expert. “Caffeine is an active ingredient in various headache medications, including both over-the-counter and prescription medications. There is also some limited evidence that suggests sugar or its sweet taste may increase pain tolerance in the short term,” she says.
Additionally, use caution when consuming products with artificial sweeteners, like Diet Coke, as they can be migraine triggers for some people.
It’s important to note that Zanskar is not endorsing any of these treatments. Be sure to ask your doctor before combining any of these medicines.
Coke and Caffeine: Consume With Caution
While caffeine can be a pain reliever, especially when combined with aspirin; for some people, it can actually trigger a migraine attack. For that reason, the benefits of Coca-Cola for migraine kind of fizzle out for the experts.
Caffeine is also a big culprit in migraine overuse headache (MOH) when it's used in combination with OTC or other pain-relieving meds, which is one reason we wouldn’t necessarily recommend drinking Coke to our migraine customers.
It’s important to meter your daily intake of caffeine, too, as your body can develop a tolerance for it, and then withdrawing can lead to more headaches.
Does Coca-Cola Help Quell Migraine Nausea?
The nausea that often accompanies migraine is the worst, and many people in the community mentioned that drinking Coca-Cola helps alleviate some of it.
There is certainly some substance behind it as a remedy: Coca-Cola contains phosphoric acid and sugar, two ingredients also found in OTC anti-nausea medicines.
Cola syrup was a common remedy used to soothe upset stomachs during the first half of the 20th century. You can still find old-fashioned cola syrups marketed for nausea online.
The carbonation in the soda can also help soothe an upset stomach and reduce stomach acidity. But caffeine can also irritate the stomach, so use caution if you’re not sure how it affects you.
Final Thoughts
There’s clearly something special about Coca-Cola in the migraine community. The caffeine and sugar in this iconic beverage can be helpful and maybe even comforting during an attack.
It’s not something the Zanskar experts would recommend relying on or consuming too frequently, but we’re not going to stop you from trying it every now and then if it soothes your head and/or your stomach during a migraine attack.
Instead, we recommends the migraine basics: Get at least eight hours of sleep, stay hydrated, and identify your triggers.
